You Don’t Have To BE A Racist To Say/Do Something Racist
This is such a simple concept, and very important. nobody is perfect, everybody makes mistakes. that means you should own up to them. white people are taught that racism is okay, just because you don’t actively hate POC or think they’re beneath you, society has still taught you that inherently racist things are okay.
Everybody is ignorant, I’m learning new things every day. If you do or say something offensive, own up to it and apologize. Some people still might not like you or use it as an excuse to be mean to you, but if you genuinely didn’t mean to hurt anybody, most people will understand that. You don’t have to be racist to do/say racist things, you just have to learn from it and move on. It doesn’t make it okay that you said it, but now you know not to do it again.
Jumping down people’s throats to defend yourself just makes you look that much worse.I mean, I sincerely hope I’d get told off if I said or did something racist. That’s not the kind of person I want to be, so shouldn’t I care about coming across that way MORE than I care about my feelings getting hurt by being “labeled”???
This isn’t hard. Get over yourselves, white people. It’s good that you don’t like being called racist - you recognize that it’s bad. But we need to focus less on the “hey you called me mean name” and more on the “oh wow I didn’t realize I came across that way, I’m so sorry and what can I do differently so I don’t offend you again??” This has absolutely NOTHING to do with your feelings. Your feelings are not what’s being oppressed here.
GET OVER YOURSELVES.
